Together, Tsavo East and Tsavo West form one of the largest protected areas in Africa, a vast, wild landscape of red earth, volcanic hills and rivers.

Why go

Tsavo East is famous for its red elephants, coloured by the dust they bathe in. Tsavo West is greener and more dramatic, with Mzima Springs, lava flows and the Chyulu Hills. The parks see far fewer vehicles than the Mara.

How the trip runs

The safari starts in Tsavo East with game drives and a visit to Lugard Falls on the Galana River. You then cross to Tsavo West for Mzima Springs and the Shetani lava flow before returning to Nairobi or continuing to the coast.

Good to know

Tsavo combines easily with a beach stay in Diani or Mombasa. Bring a hat and sunscreen; the parks are hot in the middle of the day.
