Overview
About this trip
Lamu is the oldest living Swahili town in East Africa and one of the most peaceful places on the coast. There are no cars: donkeys and dhows are still the way to get around.
Why go
Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, carved doors and old stone houses. A short walk or boat ride away, Shela village has a long, empty beach backed by dunes. It is the perfect place to slow down.
How the trip runs
Fly into Manda and take a short boat to your hotel. Days include a guided walk through the old town, a sunset dhow sail, time on Shela beach and a boat trip to the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island.
Good to know
Lamu is a conservative Muslim town; dress modestly when walking in town. The Lamu Cultural Festival is usually held in November.
