Overview
About this trip
Amboseli lies at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, and is one of the best places on the continent to watch elephants up close.
Why go
Large elephant herds move between the swamps and the dry plains, often with the snow-capped peak behind them. The park is also good for lion, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and many bird species, especially flamingos and pelicans on the seasonal lake.
How the trip runs
Drive or fly from Nairobi and arrive in time for an afternoon game drive. The next day includes early-morning and afternoon drives, when the mountain is usually at its clearest, and a stop at Observation Hill for a view over the swamps.
Good to know
Kilimanjaro is often hidden by cloud in the middle of the day. Dawn and late afternoon give the best chance of clear photos.
